The central Sahara Desert in Africa on Earth

Gemini 11 photograph of the central Sahara Desert in Africa. The countries of Libya, Chad, Niger, Sudan, and Algeria are visible in this image. The Marzuq Sand Sea is just right of center. Just to the upper right of this is the dark, 300 by 150 km Al Haruj al Aswad volcanic field. The volcanic Tibesti mountains are at the lower right. The Gulf of Sidra is at the upper right, and the Hamada de Tinrhert mountains are at the upper left. North is at about 11:00. The image covers almost 2.5 million square km .

Gemini 11 photograph of the Gulf of Aden to the right and the Red Sea to the left. At top center is Saudi Arabia and at the bottom Somalia and Ethiopia are visible. The Mandab gate between the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden is near the center. Lake Abbe is visible towards the lower left. North is at 11:00. The Gulf of Aden is about 300 km wide.

Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast on Earth

Photograph of the Gulf Coast of Texas and Louisiana taken through the open hatch of Gemini 11 in the early morning. Air pollution plumes from smokestacks can be seen in Houston, Texas City, Freeport, and Port Arthur in Texas and Lake Charles, Baton Rouge, and Bogalusa in Louisiana. The plumes in the Houston area, at center, move northeastward at lower levels and then are carried southward by upper level winds. The view is to the northeast. Galveston Bay, at the center of the image, is about 50 km long.

India and Sri Lanka from Gemini 11

Gemini 11 image of the southern tip of India showing the island of Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) and the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal. Note the U-shaped cloudline surrounding India, due to subsiding air in the off-shore sea breezes which inhibits cloud formation. The Gemini antenna mast is prominent in the picture at the left. India is roughly 700 km across at the center of the image and north is at 11:00.
